A macerator clears waste by grinding it with a high-speed blade and pumping the slurry through narrow 22 to 32mm pipework, so it blocks far more easily than a conventional gravity toilet. The most common cause is something that should never be flushed — wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products, kitchen fats, or excess paper — jamming the blade or clogging the pump chamber. Limescale build-up on the blade and inside the chamber has the same effect over time, particularly in Manchester's hard-water areas. When this happens the unit struggles to flush, runs for longer than usual, or stops pumping altogether. Our engineers work on the full Saniflo range (Saniplus, Sanibest Pro, Sanivite) as well as Kinedo, WPM, Grundfos Sololift2 and other SFA-branded macerators. We isolate the unit, open it safely, remove the obstruction from the blade and chamber, and descale the chamber and non-return valve so the float, micro-switch and pressure membrane work freely again. Only human waste and toilet paper should go through a macerator. Wet wipes (including 'flushable' ones), cotton buds, sanitary products, nappies, dental floss, kitchen fats and food waste are the most common causes of blockages, because they wrap around the blade or clog the pump. Keeping these out of the unit is the single best way to prevent repeat blockages.
A macerator that won't flush properly is usually partly blocked or scaled up, so the blade and pump cannot move waste through the narrow discharge pipe. Limescale on the blade and a clogged chamber both reduce flushing power. We clear the blockage and descale the unit so it flushes and pumps out at full strength again. If the unit hums but still won't pump after clearing, the capacitor or motor may also need attention.
Most blocked macerators can be cleared and descaled in a single visit without replacing the unit. Replacement is only worth considering when a unit is near the end of its typical eight to ten year life, the motor has failed, or the casing is cracked.
